What is it about , Rukmani ?
Kamala Markandaya published her first novel , " Nectar in a sieve " in 1954. The story brings out the social and economical development took place shortly after India gained independence. The glimpse shared on the waking of a young nation , along with an easy - to - understand language have made " Nectar in a sieve " an international best seller translated into more than 15 languages.
Kamala pictures the story through Rukmani 's view , where it starts as a flashback of her life. Chapter by chapter we can see the growth of Rukmani ' s character ; a young daughter , sibling , wife , mother and grandmother ; and also her life with her family , Nathan and the children.
The bond she shares with Nathan , her husband is , it's beautiful. The way she admires , supports , forgives and take care of him and the rest is priceless. And that we call ' love ' . No matter the differences , acceptance and understanding is must for a lovable life . We all need that kind of a love , despite of success and happiness , in order to survive and exist. That's what Rukmani taught me ; Love keeps encouraging you to fight and stand still in the middle of storms. Agree ?
To know whether Kamala is talking about the impacts of social development or a life of an Indian woman or a love between a tenant farmer and his young wife, you can't just sit and keep scrolling this. Instead get the book and go reading !
For me it's all about celebrating the human spirits. Cheers to Nathan's Ruku .

DeleteEven though Kamala tried to capture social issues through her novel, she just tortured the character way too much imo. Nice article btw! keep 'em coming!!
